Need Vs. Faith

One of the common things that lately I seem to hear a lot is the concept of need as a justification for lack of faith. Today as I am writing this, it is a Tuesday afternoon and to be honest, I have heard the same justification, at least three times in the past two days.

Why is it that it is so easy for us to justify our desires as a need? Is that what God teaches us? From what I see in the Bible, the only need in our lives is following Jesus with all of our hearts. The rest are just temporary things. Here is the truth, if we are not willing to give God all of our needs, then we don't really trust Him to be our provider and savior.

Here are a list of a few things I have heard this week:

  • I need to drink alcohol. It is a need.
  • I need the money, so I can't give it to God.
  • My sexual life is a result of a need, I have no way of controlling it.
As you read this, go an and add the things that you say are your needs. My challenge for you who read this is this that you would identify the things in your life which you call a need, and see if they are opposing what God is teaching you to do.

The only thing you need is Jesus.

Psalm 9:10
And those who know your name put their trust in you, for you, O Lord, have not forsaken those who seek you.

Isaiah 55:1-2
Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and you will delight in the richest of fare.
